Ideal Temperature For House Plants

Here in Gainesville, we’re lucky to have lush, beautiful follagiage and landscaping year round. But that doesn’t mean that the temperature inside your home is as concise to growing plants as the outdoors! In today’s blog post, we’ll be sharing some tips and tricks for controlling temperature for house plants. Why Is Temperature Important?

After light, temperature is the second most important factor of healthy plant growth inside. In general, your plants enjoy the same temperature that you are comfortable in. However, sometimes the temperature within your home can vary. For example, if you’ve placed a plant near a sunny window, it can get much warmer than one placed further away. If you tend to get drafts from windows, that can also cause damage to your plant.

Keep It Cooler At Night

Even the most tropical plants like it to be a little cooler at night than during the day. Try dropping temperatures from five to 10 degrees at night. The temperature will naturally drop when the sun goes down, but you should also adjust your air conditioner to help make your plants more happy.

Don’t Let Things Get Too Cold

Plants can’t just layer up or get under a blanket when things get chilly in the winter, so it’s important to keep your thermostat at a comfortable level. If the temperature in your home drops below 50 degrees, chill damage can occur on more sensitive plants. Signs of this damage include yellowing or dropped leaves.

Don’t Turn Off Your AC

Some people like to turn their air conditioning off at night or if they go away for the weekend, but big shifts in temperature are bad for your house plants. Turning off your AC is also bad for energy efficiency, as the HVAC system will need to work even harder to get back to a comfortable temperature when you turn it back on.

Humidity Requirements

Here in Gainesville, it gets pretty humid! Plants love humidity, which is why greenhouses are so humid. However, we don’t want to live in greenhouses, so we use our residential air conditioning to pull moisture from the air or we purchase a dehumidifier. If you prefer a drier home, be sure to compensate by misting your house plants regularly or setting a bowl with water and rocks near your plants. As the water evaporates, it will create a humid environment around your plants but not in your cool, comfortable, air conditioned home.
